Gary Close in his office |
Gary Close has painted all of his life. Born to a military family he lived
in France and Germany before finally settling down to finish out his
childhood in Virginia. Exploring the fields and woods of Southside
Virginia he soon developed a love of the southern countryside and
character. This is clearly evident in the main body of his work.
Although he has experimented in many mediums, Close focuses on oils.
He uses bright colors and subtle textures to convey the spirit of the
scene. This remains a constant theme in his work - color and texture
to interpret the world as he sees it.

Close's first formal art show was in 1980 at the University of Virginia-Wise.
In 1982 "Howdy" was selected for exhibit at the 1982 World's Fair. He
has exhibited in private galleries and most recently, at the Lithuanian
Embassy in Washington, DC. Close now lives in Culpeper, Virginia with
his wife and two children where he paints-and when he is not painting
he acts as the Prosecuting Attorney for Culpeper County.
